Access Key d - Disclaimer
- To use an access key in Windows, press ALT + the access key (use the main keyboard not the numeric keypad). Macintosh users should press CONTROL + the key. In Internet Explorer this will select the link. Then press RETURN to follow the link.
- In Netscape and Mozilla Firefox there is no need to press RETURN as the link will be followed as soon as you press the access key.
- In Opera, press SHIFT + ESC instead of ALT, then the access key.
- Most, but not all, browsers support access keys. Users of some screen reading software may find that some of the access keys conflict with their software key combinations.
Navigation Aids
For people who use a screen reader, all pages have a "Skip" link at the top to go direct to the page content and bypass the navigation menu.
- The navigation menu always offers links to all main sections of the website.
- At the foot of each page there are text links to all pages of the site.
- All pages on this site use structured semantic markup. Heading 1 elements are used for page titles, Heading 2 elements are used for subtitles and so on.
Design
- Frames: We do not use frames at all on this site. Web sites with frames can be difficult to navigate with a screen reader unless you actually know frames exist and which frames contain the information for which you are looking.
- Tables: Tables are only used to present tabular data on this site. All layout and positioning is achieved through style sheets (CSS), thus separating presentation from content.
- Images: All informational images on this site provide alternative descriptive text.
- Colour: We do not employ colour coding of information other than aesthetic styling. Where colour is used for visual enhancement, sufficent contrast has been applied to ease readability.
- Multimedia: There is currently no animation or audio/video content on this site.
- Scripts, Applets and Plug-ins: Javascript has been used to enhance the user experience of this site (e.g. form validation, button roll-overs, etc). Although we recommend enabling JavaScript to gain the most from our site, it is not essential. We do not use Java Applets that are executed from within another program or plug-ins that add features to standard browsers.
- Cookies: We do not currently use cookies on this site.
- Links to External Sites: Where we have provided links to other websites for additional information, these will open in a new window. To return to this website, simply close the new window. We do not accept liability for the information held on any third party site.
- Pop-up Windows: The use of 'pop-up' windows is restricted to presentations, previews, PDF's, and short forms on this site. There are no automated or timed pop-up windows, and no Javascript 'tricks' to manipulate them.
- Page Redirects: The only redirects used on this site are used to acknowledge form submissions before returning you to our home page.
Personalisation
- Colours have been chosen to ensure that the contrast between the background and the foreground is suitable for several forms of colour-blindness.
- Relative font-sizes have been used so that visitors can easily change them using the browser's "text size" option.
Standards Compliance
There are many issues for web designers and developers to address when producing an "accessible" web site. What is accessible to one person may not be accessible to another, and so web sites have to try to find an acceptable middle ground. There are several different screen readers, many different browsers, and several versions of each.
Pages are valid under HTML 4.1 and CSS 1.2. The site has been tested with Internet Explorer 6, Netscape Navigator 7, Opera 8 and Mozilla Firefox 1.0.
Although the pages were designed to look their best at a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 px, they are accessible at any resolution over 800 x 600 px.
To ensure your Internet and World Wide Web experience is as enriched as possible, we strongly recommend you keep your browser and screen reading software up to date.
